Frequently Asked Question

How do I sign up for lessons?

Contact me and we can organise a first lesson.

Am I too old to have music lessons?

No, there's no such thing! Lots of adults of all ages have music lessons.

Is my child too young for music lessons?

I personally teach children from 5 years old (in year 1 at school). If your child is younger you can get in touch and we can chat about how to engage your child with music at home until they are old enough for lessons.

Do you teach the piano or the keyboard?

I teach the piano, but you can learn on a keyboard. The main difference is that one has an on/off button and lots of buttons to press, the other has pedals and doesn't use electricity.

I've not played a musical instrument before, is that okay?

Yes, you do not need any prior experience to have music lessons. It's my job to teach you, wherever you are in your musical journey.

I don't play a musical instrument - can my child still have lessons?

Absolutely, parents are not required to have any musical knowledge, the best way to support your child at home is with lots of encouragement and lots of practice.

I don't have a piano, can I still have piano lessons?

Yes, but you will find it easier and more enjoyable if you have an instrument at home that you can practice on.

My child isn't practicing, what can I do?

Have a look at my tips and adivce, there are ideas for how to motivate your child and how to get the most out of practice. You can also chat to your teacher and discuss how to motivate your child to practice at home.

I don't have time to practice, can I still learn the piano/violin?

Yes, but be aware that some weeks progress will feel slow. If you are enjoying the lesson then do what you can at home and enjoy the process of learning.

Do I need to bring my keyboard to the lesson?

No, I have a piano that I use for lessons at my home. And in school we have school keyboards that we use for the lesson.

Do I need to bring my violin to the lesson?

Yes - violins are much more portable than the piano, so please bring your violin to the lesson.

Do I need to bring my music books to the lesson?

Yes - in the lesson we might write helpful notes in the music, so you can remember what we talk about in the lesson.

Can my child text/email you directly to get their practice/to organise lessons.

No. For safeguarding reasons I will not dierctly text or email anyone under 18. I am happy for you to forward any emails/texts I send you to your child, but I will not directly email or text them myself.
